Hi,

I've been offered a job in south Austin, near E St. Elmo road, and I live in Cedar Park near Buttercup Creek. I know it's a pretty long commute, but I was wondering if you all could help me figure out the best time to leave the house if I need to be at work at 8AM.

Hopefully I will be able to find an apartment down south soon, but I'm not sure if most places require pay stubs or if a verification call would suffice.

Thank you

To be on time, 100% of the time, 6:30am. To be on time, 70% of the time, 7:00am.

I agree, I'd leave extra early the first day and plan on stopping for breakfast near St. Elmo if you get there much before 8am.

The Omni Hotel at IH-35 & Ben White has a really nice dining room that serves breakfast. Reward yourself for getting up early.

Thanks for your help. Any advice for adjusting to my first 8-5 job out of college? I'm thinking it's going to be pretty stressing for the first few weeks.

Go to bed early, then get up early to avoid the stress on the way to work (not just the first day). What kind of job?

Agree with this. Since it's a new job, I'd just plan on 6:30am for a while. Any type of accident or incident would make you late if you left at 7:00am. Once all the schools let out at the end of May, you'll be able to leave at 7:00am without issues for the summer until they start up again at the end of August.

Congrats on the job. My advice: don't let anyone hold you back. There's a lot of that, especially in this town, and at that age. Unambitious acquaintances who drink too much, girlfriends with "issues", lazy trust fund kids with night owl schedules, etc.

Exercise never hurts... healthy body = healthy mind

Start getting up early and going to bed early now M-F, mimicking your job schedule, so you can adapt and don't show up the first day at work dazed and confused.

Curious, I did a goggle maps search for apartments in the area and while most had only 2.5 stars I found a few with 4 stars.

You are already ahead thinking of how to get through traffic and get there on time - that's a good start! Honestly, commuting in this town when there is no traffic is a breeze, and when there is traffic it's horrible. I prefer to leave the house before 7 just to avoid the ugliness. Yes, you will arrive south sooner than you need to, but your other option will be sitting in bumper to bumper traffic and maybe not getting there on time. I agree with the others, get south of town early and stop for coffee or breakfast and be ready to tackle the day head on. New jobs are always stressful, so just be ready to put all your energy in to learning and soaking in the new surroundings.

Commuting from Cedar Park to Mopac & 183 intersection can take anywhere from 15-45 minutes on any given day from 7am-10am for no particular reason. The traffic will actually lighten up as you get near downtown on Mopac but I'm not sure how it is on the other side of downtown. If you leave by 645 you should be good 99% of the time but like others said leave early the first few weeks and eat breakfast in the car when you get there. Also its a good idea to arrive 15-30 minutes early to work in general.
