Hey all,

I am trying to help my paretns find the right place for them in Texas. They are interesting in the Dallas and Austin areas and we are having some difficulty on deciding which area will be better for a retired couple. I posted the same question under the Dallas forum and got great feedback

I have lived in Houston for the past 3 years. I am from the Connecticut/NYC area and my parents still live there. My parents will like to move to Texas to be closer to me and enjoy nicer weather and more reasonable politics. Houston is a little too humid and urban for their liking. They are both 60 years old and are looking for a nice suburb to retire. I am thinking the Dallas suburbs may be a good match for their liking, but have also been getting plenty of recommendations for the Austin area.

I have not spent a great deal of time in the Austin area, but from what I can see it really looks a great place to live. I am obviously interested in finding them low crime area's and a calm suburban life. Housing can be average prices. Typical middle class retired couple budget 150-200k.

Given the criteria I mentioned what towns and areas outside of the city of Austin would you recommend? I believe getting input for everyday people who live there is best so I appreciate any help you can offer.

Thank you

Matt

There is Georgetown of course but I know that I can completely see my retired parents in the very well-kept but affordable condos and townhomes in NW Austin -- not the suburbs but the NW part of Austin proper, NW Hills, Great Hills, Highland Hills. Look at the places along Mesa Blvd and Steck Ave.

All of Austin is fairly low crime and generally very safe

Austin would be a great place. We have had several similar threads recently, see these.

If they would rather be in a smaller town near Austin, I'd recommend Bastrop, Marble Falls, Georgetown.
