Hello,

I'm visiting Austin in mid-May for a bachelorette party and am looking for some daytime activities that would give us a good feel for the Austin culture. We only have two days so we want to stay in the city and do things that are inexpensive and unique to Austin.

My friends aren't museum people so those are out. I've heard about the Barton Springs and bat watching and those are possibilities. We decided that boating, tubing, and anything around Lake Travis are out due to logistics and cost.

Would love any suggestions you have. Thanks in advance!

You could canoe or kayak on Town Lake.

Well you don't want culture and you don't want outdoorsie activities. That leaves eating and you can do that pretty well in Austin. Hit the trailers hit the lunch specials. You could graze at the lake or take them on a capital tour or a UT Tour.

If your here on a Sunday Go to Ginny's Little Longhorn for Chicken Sh** Bingo and some Dale Watson.

Go to the Oasis. It's next to Lake Travis.

Visit the Capital.

Eat BBQ at the Salt Lick (bring your own beer).

There's live music everywhere mostly in the evenings though.

Go swim at Barton Springs.

Thanks everyone!

I think the itinerary for now is:

Friday:
-Guero's
-Threadgills

Sat:
-Barton Springs
-Stubb's BBQ for lunch
-Capitol and UT
-west 6th st bars at night

Sun:
-brunch at Taverna or Enoteca, walk around there and the lake
-food trailers for lunch

Unfortunately we leave Sunday afternoon so no chicken s*** bingo for us!!

Let me know if there's anything else you recommend or anything you recommend changing! Also, can we bring food or drink to Barton Springs Pool?

Thanks!

I'd hit at least one restaurant on one of the lakes. If you want to stay close-in, try Hula Hut, Abel's on the Lake, or Mozarts for coffee. They are all at Oyster Landing in Tarrytown (Lake Austin). If you don't mind a nice drive out on the west side, go to the Oasis on Lake Travis.

You might also want to take a brief side trip and walk up Mt Bonnell for a bit of a view of the city and some nice neighborhoods.

The canoe/kayak (or now even hydrobike) thing on Ladybird Lake could also be an option; there is no real logistics involved. There is a rental place right by the Barton Springs pool. Just walk up and rent, they have all the stuff you need.

Barton Springs Road has some food trailers and Austin-y restaurants. It's walking distance from the Springs.

Other options which are a bit of a drive; Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood or Hamilton Pool. Call first if you are going to Hamilton Pool to make sure it's open.

I recommend Esther's Follies Austin Texas Premier Comedy Show for Friday or Saturday night. Make your ticket purchase in advance online so you don't have to stand in line before the show. That way you are sure to have seats.

Go shopping on South Congress. While you're there grab a cupcake at the Hey Cupcake trailer. Lots of fun shops over there and a definite Austin vibe. As far as where to stay I recommend the Hotel Allendale or the Austin Motel on South congress in particular to get a real feel for something local.
