Down the list at #32 out of fifty cities ranked.

Factors analyzed included growth opportunities, compensation, benefits, work-life balance, career advancement, senior management, job security, etc.

Two California cities at the very top and 4 in the top 10! The highest ranking Texas cities were El Paso and Houston at #7 and #12 on the list.

I can relate to most of those factors not being satisfying.

I think one of the reasons for this is the environment at Dell. Although I've never worked there, I've heard from many people that they are not satisfied working there. Thus, that explains the "recommend to others" category since Dell is such a large part of our workforce. Also, many people telecommute in Austin and are vulnerable to layoffs, that explains the extremely low "job security" rating. When a company wants to cut jobs, remote workers are among the first.

We're a great city to live in, but we don't have the best jobs, people are just "making do" with what they can find to live here.

The statistical methods, information gathering, etc of nearly all of these surveys is entirely suspect! Whether Austin is on the top or not, they are primarily to drive internet traffic not represent reality. Anyone who bases a life decision on them is nuts!

That said, Dell is a terrible place to work!

I totally believe it. Austin has a large pool of talented workers so competition is stiff - meaning wages, job security, growth opportunities, and career advancement are lower than they would be with less competition. Austin tech companies are also just as driven as their west coast cousins meaning people are expected to deal with "emergencies" at all hours of the day or night and travel excessively. And this doesn't even include the Dell factor.

Perhaps, but that doesn't stop having a whole thread elsewhere on here of Austin top-ten lists. So obviously people care and look at them. However, I notice many are quick to criticize the lists where Austin isn't ranked well, as opposed to those where it is!

If you think this puts Austin lower on the ranking, why are two California Bay area cities ranked at the top? Same factors in play there.

I think something else is going on. Not sure specifically what it is though.

Crime, schools, poverty and decay in the city were apparently not metrics in this study. So I guess with those things aside, Detroit must be an awesome place to work.
