Hey guys. My friend and I have been out of college for a year and are ready for something new and exciting. We had a huge list of potential cities and narrowed it down to Austin. We're kind of on the no plan plan as of now but are hoping to get there by the end of the summer. We're from a small town in upstate New York and are just looking for insight on what to expect. We've never visited there or anything and just want some perspective on jobs, location to live, anything you have to offer! I know this kind of thing is posted a lot but if anyone has any feedback, it'd be greatly appreciated ( : We won't know anyone there...we're kind of just doing this as a whim while we have nothing holding us back.

You're really going to want to ask more specific questions and provide more information. What type of area do you want to live? Price range? What type of jobs are you looking for? What are your degrees in and are you planning on utilizing them?

Also, visit first and spend time in the area you can afford and see if it is right for you.

What field are you in? If it's something like nursing or you have specific tech skills, you will likely have a relatively simple time finding a job. If you're looking for a job in education, or you have some non-specific target like, "I got a history degree, but I'm not sure what I want to do, so yeah, I dunno, just anything," then you're in for a rough time finding a professional job (rough as in, it may not happen even within a year's time--we have TONS of new grads coming out of the local universities and they have connections in their field) and will likely be waiting tables like many other people with degrees in Austin. Before coming, it would be a good idea to have at least 6 months in savings.

She majored in Sociology and I majored in English. But she's also been rowing for the Nationals and is interested in sports related jobs as well and I've been in the animal field for a couple years. But we're not necessarily looking for degree requiring jobs, just anything to keep us afloat while we get on our feet. She just graduated from bartending school and is wondering if there's openings in that sort of field/? I'm wwilling to work any odd job jobs in the meantime - at vet clinics, nannying, freelance - whatever.
