My family is looking to relocate to Austin this winter. My husband is going back to school (at UT) and we are looking for a place to live for the few years it will take for him to finish his degree. We are looking to spend about $1000 a month for housing. Where would we get the most for our money? We have a 2 year old son, so we need at least 2 bedrooms. Right now it looks like either a house in Pflugerville or a random apartment in the city. Either is fine, but we would love to find a place with personality. Would it be possible to find anything remotely interesting in this price range?

Thanks for you help

Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to edit, but I have one more thing to add.

We are looking for something fairly close to UT. My husband lived off Riverside his first time around at UT, and the shuttle/parking situation was always a nightmare. We would love to live somewhere within biking distance. (I know, probably wishful thinking.)

Thanks!

Look at the old apartments in the Hyde Park area and south toward campus. There MAY be something in that price range, but you will have to really not mind 'personality', 'cause the old apartments sure have some. Also, just west of Guadalupe ~ 35th st. used to have some old apartments that were inexpensive.

Anyway, I obviously don't know any specifics, but in general the apartments that might meet your criteria will be small (15-30 units), old (like, 30 or 40 years), no amenities (no pool, no workout room, etc), and the manager will be a graduate student and his wife in one of the uints.

Thanks Trainwreck. Personality is fine, as long as it doesn't include roaches and mice...

Are there any areas that you wouldn't enter with a team of body gaurds? My husband works nights, so we need a place that is safe. I've read some horrible things about the Metropolitan apartments being a meth haven, and we definitely don't want to live in a place like that. Please tell me we won't have to spend 1500 dollars/month just to feel safe!

Don't rule out a bus/bike combo. The buses all have bike racks on front.

I agree that Hyde Park sounds like a good place to look, or further north off N. Lamar.

Cheack AustinHomeSearch.com for all the MLS lease listings and you'll get an idea of what's available. Also, try a leasing locator company that specializes in Central areas.

Steve

You should check out Northwest Hills (specifically Far West) area. It's convenient to everything and renting is in that price range. There is the UT shuttle to get to campus, but if you are a serious rider you can ride there via bike routes through the neighborhoods. Also, you can reach good mountain bike trails (Bull Creek) through the neighborhood. There are also city bus routes, and you can walk/ride to the grocery store, bank, post office, parks, etc.

Thanks for the input everyone. Is there anywhere in the general Austin area where 1000-1100/month could get anything good? I ask because we live in the Alliance area of Ft. Worth right now, and pay 1100 for a brand new 3 bedroom house (about 1300 sqft). Everything I've read from forbes ect. has said that cost of living is even a bit lower in Austin, but it doesn't seem like housing costs are reflective of this. How far out of central Austin would someone need to go in order to have a nice apartment or home in my price range?

You'd have lots of 3/2 homes to choose from if you went as far out as Cedar Park/Leander, Kyle/Buda, or Manor/Elgin. All nice places to live...Leander has a good bus system to downtown/UT.

I did a search on Austinhomesearch.com and found "Macmora Cottages." New stand alone condos in a gated community near the Domain. (Mopac/183 area). That's the closest in "good" thing that I found A 2/1 unit was listed for 1095/mth.

Good luck!

I've been looking into renting an apartment in Austin as well, and I found these rentals on rent.com. All of them accept pets, so if you don't have a pet, you have way more choices than this. I wrote little notes about the pet amenities it had because that's what I'm interested in. (i.e. YARD). They're all 2+ bedroom because that's what I was looking for, and some of them are more than $1100. Oh, also, there were WAY more apartments than I have here... but I only picked the ones that had a 6 mo lease or less.

I know absolutely NOTHING about these places other than what I've seen online, fyi. And I don't know if they have apartments available right now. I believe most of them are South or SW Austin.

The first number is the number of bedrooms. The second number is the bathrooms. The third number is the rent. The fourth number is the square footage.
i.e.
bed bath rent sq ft
2 1-2 $950-$1200 1005

GOOD LUCK!
