Wife and I will be in town tomorrow night. We LOVE eating at the local eateries in Austin, but rarely find ourselves downtown. When we do, it's usually one of the uber-expensive steak places.

Tomorrow we'll be looking for somewhere affordable, yet "uniquely Austin". We'll be around 4th street, but don't mind a bit of a walk. Any suggestions would be great.

Here are a few... you may want to check restaurant.com for some cheap gift certificates for those places too. Sign up for their mailing list and they'll send you some discount codes that make them even cheaper (ridiculously so).

These aren't cheap, but reasonable (<$20 per entree) -

* Moonshine (by the convention center)
* Bess Bistro (Sandra Bullocks restaurant, usually a restaurant.com cert available)
* Garrido's (fancy Tex Mex, bottom of the 360 building)
* Second Bar+Kitchen (bottom of Austonian)

Oh, if you go over to where the Whole Foods is (and that's not a bad place to eat, either).. then across the street is 24 Diner which is also quite good.

Haddingtons on West 6th blew my socks off. Fantastic Ambiance - mustachiod hipster waiters who were super cool, amazing cocktails, and wonderful food that was fresh, exciting delicious. I'm going back!

I second this. And if you go during happy hour many of their "small plates" are half off. We probably go here every other month and it has been consistently very good to great.

Garrido's is definitely a great place and not very expensive at all. Their appetizers and soft tacos are excellent. And the food is NOT Tex-Mex, which is a good thing.

Iron Works BBQ at 2nd and Red River... an old time Austin signature eatery

Franks, at 4th and Colorado. Casual dining with surprisingly sophisticated choices. I had a great venison sausage there last week.

Taverna at 2nd and Lavaca. Great risotto and gourmet pizza, killer happy hour, super Sunday brunch.
