Tex-Mex and BBQ are good. For Tex-Mex, Chuy's is famous. Plenty other good ones, too. For BBQ, Iron Works, Saltlick in Driftwood (30 min south on FM1826) are my favorites.

Oasis has awesome view at the lake. Sunset is great in June, since it's around 9 pm.

Too much to cover on the culture. I'll let someone else write an essay.

Good shopping on S. Congress and near UT campus (The Drag) No sure what you consider bad, but there is not too many places that seemed very dangerous when I visited. I guess near the airport seemed a bit shady but I didnt feel threatened the least bit. Cant speak of the culture being from elsewhere but I'm sure some others can help out with that. Have a nice trip, you will have a blast!
