No claims yet, so can't comment on that. All insurance companies are regulated by the state insurance commissioner, so the differentiators have to be service, price and ratings (check AM Best).

IMHO the biggest advantage is AAA's local offices and agents. They are friendly and responsive. A membership (AAA Basic runs ~ $79 per year for a couple) is required in order to purchase policies.

To their credit GEICO does have an outstanding web portal. It is very easy to update policies and track claims there. But one of my goals was to get away from doing business with all the TBTF thieves. While Berkshire Hathaway is not exactly that, they are in cahoots with them, as the 2008 GFC amply demonstrated.

Home insurance: $960 per year (nice digs)
Automobiles: $1,032 per year (on 2 cars (2011 and 2005), mid-tier coverages, Comp/Coll)

Thanks everyone. I got some great quotes from AAA Texas. Still need to go over the details, but looks like I may have saved that 30% the other company tried to raise.

Thumbs down Reporting another 30% increase

The master policy held by our two unit HOA has received noticed of a +30% increase for the next coverage year. Of course, we(the 2 members of the HOA) want to shop that a bit. Anyone that has any experience or knowledge of companies that offer this coverage(not all do) and would care to share will be appreciated.

senor_jt Your best bet is to contact a local independent agent who works with multiple carriers.

I'm going to call the folks at Watkins Insurance today, checking on rates/coverage after two years with one company. Last time I did that, I got a better overall coverage and saved a bit of money(autox2 and h/o). I believe Watkins is the largest independent agency in central Texas; so I reckon they would at least know where to send you.

I'm with Liberty Mutual, and my homeowner's insurance jumped up 19%

I've never had any claims in 3 years with them.

No state income tax in Texas, but they sure do get us with the property taxes and high, ever-increasing homeowners insurance!

I had 21st Century - it jumped 25% and I got a quote from Liberty Mutual for half of what I was paying 21st. I think they rope you in with low rates and then start jacking them up - seems like that's what happened with my last one.

I di have a long chat with the agent and she did say that all of the recent "disasters" in Texas drove up the premiums.

Wow, I just got mine from Farmer's and my HO jumped about 25%. Interestingly, my car insurance premium dropped by about 20% on the 6 month rate. Seems like my insurance guy was trying to offset the increase or something.

I may call around anyway. Seems kinda fishy for my car insurance to dive after 2 1/2 years of increases (no claims, no tickets) and my home insurance (no claims) to skyrocket.
