Hi,

My 11 year old niece and her mom will be coming up from San Antonio. The 11 year old is mature for her age. She would like to go shopping... I asked her what she wants to buy but she doesn't know. She will buy it when she finds it.... that isn't helpful to me.

I don't want to take her to the mall since she has the same stores in San Antonio. Can anyone suggest places that an 11 year old might enjoy browsing which are unique to this area? I live in SW Austin.

Thank you for your help. You have all been super helping me to keep the relatives entertained while I learn my way around.

Look into Toy Joy. I also has a whole back area that to me looked like it was just for girls.

Toy Joy is fun for all ages! I always have a fun time in there. I also agree with the South Congress recommendation. There are a huge variety of shops, and on the weekend there are tents set up around the trailer park area with people selling their own goods: jewelry, clothing, home decor/ art, etc. It could be an all day adventure!

You could also maybe try some of the thrift stores if you'll be clothes shopping. Savers and St. Vincent de Paul usually have a pretty solid selection of unique stuff.

I third it. SoCo.

Also downtown at Free People, Anthropology. Urban Outfitter. Expensive but my two daughters love browsing these store even when they don't buy anything. They like getting ideas for outfits that they then assemble cheaper from Target and Savers.

That said, I wouldn't indulge the wants of an 11 year old girl. There's a reason some are "mature" for their age, because they don't hear "no, you're too young" often enough. Just sayin. Take her to the Austin Childrens Museum. She's still a child. Maybe she'll be reminded of that with all the cool stuff there is to do there. There's also the Zilker Train. Don't give up on the part of her that's still a kid.

Steve
