I am in the process of deciding whether to accept a job offer in Austin or not.

The job is a great career opportunity for me and moving to Austin is appealing but without a reasonable commute (less than 20 -25 min) and a house in a decent area ( less than 350k) with good schools, we would not gain much by moving from the small town in Texas where we currently live.

I would be working near Monterey Oaks Boulevard & Mopac. Are there areas with good schools within a 20 min commute from here where we could afford a house?

I keep hearing about Circle C - what would a daily commute from Circle C to Monterey Oaks Boulevard/Mopac look like during peak traffic times?

Thanks!
Ron

Tons of options in that area, including Circle C, all well within your commute range.

There are TONs of options there. You will be working in the SW outskirts of the Austin city limits. Schools are very good in that area (generally) and there is an abundance of housing in the <$300k range. You could have a ten minute commute very easily if you wanted to, without ever driving on a major road. I would stay east of the 'Y' in Oakhill (where 290 and 71 split as they head west). That is a pretty major bottleneck. Also, I would try and stay west of MoPac so as to avoid the traffic associated with crossing from east to west.

+1 to the above. If you draw a rough square bounded by 290/71, RM 1826, Mopac and SW 45 (possibly throw in East Oak Hill area just north of 71/290, might be tougher to find options there though). You'll find dozens of options to choose from. Most were built in the 90's and many have been remodeled. You'd probably find a 15-20 minute commute at the longest, and they flow into some really good schools.

SW austin is a great place to live and work. See my comments here //www.city-data.com/blogs/blog2...gend-oaks.html Legend Oaks is just North of Circle C. Check out all the hike and bike trails in the area: http://goo.gl/maps/uBs0z

I live in Legend Oaks and own a rental property just South of Monterey Oaks Blvd. It usually takes me less then 10 minutes to drive to the rental property.
