Default 2011 Austin has the third-lowest rate of violent crime among major U.S. cities

Great news here

Austin

Quote:
Austin has the third-lowest rate of violent crime among major U.S. cities but has a very high rate of property crime, according to 2011 FBI crime statistics reported by Police Chief Art Acevedo on Tuesday.
According to the latest FBI data, which ranks cities from best to worst in terms of crime, Austin has a rate of 430 violent crimes per 100,000 people, behind only San Jose, Calif., and San Diego. The data came from 33 cities that have more than 500,000 people.
Even better news, the total numbers of crimes have decreased in every category except for Arson

I was happy to discover that the City of Austin has started posting their crime rates listings by zip code again. Here they are http://www.austintexas.gov/page/crim...isted-zip-code

The good ood news comparing 2010 and 2011:

Rape decreased from 261 to 225
Thefts decreased from 34534 to 33442
Burglaries decreased from 8640 to 7018
robbery decreased from 1268 to 1144
Murder decreased from 39 to 2
Agg Assault decreased from 1961 to 1922
Motor V-Theft decreased from 2406 to 2256

The only area that increased was Arson going from 111 to 116

That is good news that crime is Austin is continuing a downward trend. In 2010 Rape, Robbery, Agg. Assault, Burglary, Theft and total crimes decreased compared to 2009.

The seven highest crime areas for total crimes are:
ZIP....INDEXED..TOTAL
78741...3,905...13,097 - E. Riverside Drive and Montopolis
78753...3,606..11,068 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)
78704...2,868...9,505 - S. Central Austin, Town Lake - BenWhite & Mopac/Loop 1 to IH-35
78745...2.707...8,992 - Far S. Central Aus, S. of BenWhite to Davis Lane & Mopac/Loop 1 - IH-35.
78758...2.581...8,156 - Mopac to Lamar & 183 to Parmer Lane
78701...2,425..10,821 - Downtown Austin
78702...2,273....8,592 - East Austin from MKL Blvd down to Town Lake and from IH-35 to Airport Blvd.

Everyone of those crime totals decreased from 2010 except in 78701.

Highest crime areas for Aggravated Assaults are:
78741...192 - E. Riverside Drive and Montopolis
78753...164 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)
78702...153 - East Austin from MKL Blvd down to Town Lake and from IH-35 to Airport Blvd.
78758...148 - Mopac to Lamar & 183 to Parmer Lane
78723...123 - Airport Blvd to 183 & MLK to 290
78701...114 - Downtown Austin
78745...101 - Far S. Central Aus, S. of BenWhite to Davis Lane & Mopac/Loop 1 - IH-35.

This is thanks in part to both the fact that Austin is a very educated city and Austin also has one of the better Police departments in the nation.
