Hello everyone,

The family and I currently live in NJ and are looking to finally move out of there. We were looking at the Austin area in Texas. I have been doing some research and it seems as though prices for houses and property taxes are comparable to what they are in NJ, which are quite high.
Also:

How is the economy there? Are there jobs?

Has anyone made the move to the Austin area from another state? Did you regret the move or was it a positive decision?

I look forward to hearing your responses.

Thank you

Austin has an unemployment rate of 5.3% and has one of the 70 fastest growing economies in the world.

Work in Texas dot com

There seems to be a lot of IT/tech support kind of work. Including work from home phone center.

You did not say where in NJ so I had to guess. From City-Data:

Newark, New Jersey
Median household income $38,963
Mean price detached houses $311,395
Median gross rent $938
Cost of Living Index 120.6 (US average is 100)

Austin, TX
Median household income $50,132
Mean price detached houses $262,343
Median gross rent $883
Cost of Living Index 95

The economy is doing great, there are lots of other threads discussing this hear if you search for them.

Hundreds of thousands of people have and are moving to Austin from all over the US. As a result the availability of housing and apartments is at an all time low.

I look forward to hearing your responses.

Thank you

You can look up some old posts regarding the differences in lifestyle, etc. between Jersey and Austin (and they are many and vast).

Cost of living in Austin is far less than New Jersey. Jersey residents pay more taxes than any other state in the country. Property taxes here are less than Jersey, and we don't have any state income tax. And depending on where you live, your housing dollar typically goes much, much further here than it does in NJ.

Thanks for the information everyone. I just have one more quick question...

What are some nice areas around Austin that have lower housing market prices than what you would find in Austin?

Thanks again

I think there are some nice big houses at a fair price in S. Austin. Down around William Cannon/Slaughter.
About 10-15 from downtown(non-rush hour) with some good grocery shopping/restaurants relatively close by.

I should qualify that by saying "big" in this instance being 2,000-3,000 sq. ft
Depending on the size of your family that may not be big enough

You asked for opinions from people that moved from other states. I came to Austin in 1993 because at that time, it was the best job market. I visited the city several times before deciding to pull up stakes and move. I don't regret the decision but it hasn't worked out as well as I hoped. The market is driven primarily by IT related companies and I'm not an IT person. And Austin is a youth oriented city and I came here as a middle-aged worker. It proved difficult to find a position. Now 20 years later, I'm about to retire and when I do, I'll be heading back north. The lack of seasons, the "Texas is Heaven and the rest of the Country Sucks" attitude, and the unbearable heat of the summer have made Texas a place I don't wish to spend the rest of my life.

How much are you looking to spend? Where will you be working? If you don't have a job lined up yet, I would advise you to rent until you do. If you buy in the southern burbs and end up working North (or vice versa), your commute will suck.
