Hello I just moved to Austin, Texas and will be attending ACC in the Spring. Because of my budget, I decided to move on West William Cannon which is like a surprisingly short walk to South Congress and less than 10-15 minutes downtown depending on traffic. I'm feeling a little apprehensive because it's not the safest area but there is a grounds officer that patrols the apartments and reports to the police department daily. Was this a good idea on my part or will I be regretting it later? My second choice was Riverside, because of my budget, but I know there's a lot of theft among students and I am more concerned about my safety in that area. Any advice is appreciated.

Safe compared to what? The worst part of Austin isn't that bad and that's hardly the worst part. Park in well lit areas. Don't leave things strewn about in your car.

There is no question that West William Cannon near Congress Avenue is safer then the Riverside Drive area.

Check out Austin Crime Map Beta - Trulia

Austin is the third safest large City in the US, violent crime is very low. Property crimes (mostly petty crimes) are very high however, so don't leave valuables in your car or laying about.

Okay, thank you all. I was so worried about my decision. I figure the worst would be if I got robbed, luckily I have renter's insurance.

I'm at the gables located at 6636 West William Cannon and planning on staying here until I buy something. I like it close enough to the city center but still far enough to feel out there. I will say the only traffic is during rush hour with freescale leaving. Really good highway access too.

Your safe. It's all pretty awesome in South Austin. I've lived here for only about 30 years so I do I have a bias.

Friend who lives out there just had her door kicked in...they cleaned her out, down to the socks in her kids drawer.

Get an alarm system. It won't stop smash and grabs, but you stand to keep most of your stuff.
