The whole vibe of the city feels more like Portland and San Francisco than other Texan cities. I was quite surprised when I first went to 6th street. It felt kind of like Venice Beach in my area with the carefree Live and Let Live attitude not found in most of Texas.

What caused Austin to have such a West Coast type culture in the middle of Texas?

I believe that the large movements of the 60s and early 70s had a pretty big effect on the city. Also, the tech industry took root here and has a commanding presence in Austin's economy. There's also UT-Austin that helps keep the spirit of innovation high. That's something that Portland, San Francisco, and Austin all share. Also, politically, they all lean in the same direction, so that's another thing.

Austin feels like the west coast? It's always felt like the Yellow Rose of Texas to me: that and some chicken fried steak, barbeque, and peach cobbler on the side! Scratch that, make it rice pudding!

Austin is not all that different from the rest of Texas, even though some folks want to believe that it is. At least, that's my experience having lived in East Texas, North Texas, Central Texas, and with friends and family in other parts of the state.

So, to me, it feels like Texas. Less so than it used to, with all the move to make it just like where everyone who moved here came from, but still Texas.

I see you are in the South Bay which is where I'm from and I spent the rest of my formative years in LA; I'm afraid I have to disagree, I do not think Austin resembles or feels like the west coast whatsoever, other than having a tech presence. It feels like a cool town IN Texas.

I guess we agree to disagree. Lake Travis feels alot like Palos Verdes in landscape and terrain. It felt like back home to me.

I've heard this too. I've never been to California so I can't speak from personal experience. However, I've heard from several different families that moved to the LT area from California, and they all said the same thing...If someone would've put a blindfold over their eyes and moved them from CA to LT (without them knowing), they wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.

Some people get offended when others say that Austin feels Californian/west coast, but I take it as a compliment. California is beautiful. The west coast is beautiful. It's flattering.

I think it's (the topography and geography) beautiful, too, Austinite101. I just don't think, based on my personal experience, that they are alike. Especially don't think the "vibe" is the same, and there's nothing wrong with that. Every place doesn't need to be just like every other place, and the fact that they ARE different is part of what makes life interesting.
