I just read yet another article in the Statesman about a pedestrian hit and killed on Hwy 71. I don't understand why there are so many people out walking on highways. Is it just me?

I was surprised to see a guy hitchhiking off of I-35 last night around 10pm. He was wearing dark clothes as well.

I saw someone dodging in and out of traffic on the 183 service road at dusk a few months ago. I called 911 - he seemed suicidal, and almost caused accidents in front of me and behind me. I just assume that anyone trying to cross a major road or highway like that is impaired in some way.

You talk as if there is another option other than 71. Yeah it's a fast road, but it's the ONLY road.

Someone said this happened at a crosswalk. We need more details on who had the right of way.

I saw that comment, that would be very important information if true.

Usually when a pedestrian is hit by multiple cars like in this case, I assume it is a case where the person tried to cross right in the middle of traffic.

On another note, I did witness someone cross I-35 a few weeks back. It was south of Kyle, on the way to San Marcos, in the middle of the day. It seemed pretty obvious why he did it -- there was a motel and nothing else on the side he was crossing from, and directly across the highway there was a big retail shopping center... restaurants, retail, convenience store, etc. But he would have had to walk a mile in either direction just to get to a cross street to go over... so he must have stupidly decided to to cross. He moved pretty quick, but it was still a close call and freaked everyone out. I mean, if he'd stumbled or something his life would have been over.
