Somehow I think that it would be Austin residents who would be footing the bill for this "honor".

No thanks.

We don't have the venues, plain and simple.

Dallas probably has the greatest number of venues, Cowboys stadium is big enough for opening/closing and track and field ceremonies. AA arena could host the basketball events, the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington could host baseball, gymnastics could be held at the arena in Ft. Worth, etc...

The Dallas bid would probably include Austin for rowing (Town Lake), kayaking (Guadalupe River). Sailing would be in Galveston Bay. So Houston would be involved even if Dallas wins.

The Houston bid would be more centralized, Houston almost has enough venues, but they'd have to build a few more. Rowing could possibly be done on its bayous, sailing in Galveston Bay, it would still need to come to Hill country for some rapids for kayaking.

Has there been a location for the summer this hot before? I guess Mexico City? people might drop like flies from the heat. (maybe not the athletes but some of the spectators for sure.)
Mexico City is not hot! Highs in July are in the low 80's. Mexico City actually has better weather than San Diego!

As far a the pool, they commonly build the pool as an outdoor venue that is temporary. They have done this for the last two Olympic trials I believe.
Olympic Trials is much different than the Olympics. The US Olympic trials have been held indoors in Omaha the last two times using a temporary pool in an arena. Long Beach held trials before that using two temporary pools on a parking lot. San Antonio is bidding for the 2016 Olympic Trials, using a pool in the Alamodome. Note that any facility for Olympic or trials use must have two 50M pools - one for competition, the other for warmup and practice.

But the Olympics themselves are a different story. The diving well needs to be 18 ft. deep, and none of the temporary pools to date have been built for that. Diving trials are held at a different venue entirely. The pool in London was an architectural beauty. The pool in Beijing was different, but similar in scope.

The UT pool, though a very fast and world class pool, is poorly designed to handle large crowds. The diving well is horribly located for spectators.

About the heat, the next Olympics is in Rio De Janeiro if I'm not mistaken. That city gets comparable heat to Austin.

For the record, I don't think Austin is big enough either. No thanks.

But, coming from Phoenix, these two just made me laugh!

34. Phoenix -- It's not the heat that'll get you, it's the sportswriters whining interminably about the heat that will.

22/21/20. San Antonio/Houston/Dallas -- We know all these Texas cities are different, but it really infuriates Texans when you say they're not.

MTV had an X-game contest in 1998 and it was well attended. Then we had Aquafest, which was fun. Then 2 guys started C3 Concerts and turned Aquafest into ACL and now we get 80K people once a year in September-October.

I have had enough of festivals and the last thing I want is some European a$$hat from the IOC telling me how my town needs to be changed to accommodate numerous foreign visitors for a 2 week event that has a 10-15 year financial implication.

Lee Leffingwell would be smart to take the application, shred it, and worry about our local issues.
