Hi all,

I will be moving to Austin in July to start grad school and am looking for apartments while out of state. I have a friend going to scope out a prospect around 52nd St and Cameron Road. Does anyone have any thoughts on this block/neighborhood? I did a search for police reports in that area and it seems pretty high compared to a lot of other places in Austin... anyone else live near here or know much about the area?

thanks!
becky

That's a bad pocket. I would avoid.

Thanks for your reply! Could you define "bad"? It's just hard to know what one person deems avoidable vs another... thank you!

That has been one of the rougher areas of town for many years, but I have not been up that way in a while. Use google streets and take a trip through the area. The first two places on E 52nd are a liquor store and a lounge (although, honestly, I have been to the Carousel lounge a few times to watch some friends perform). It is kind of a rule of thumb for me not to live too close to either a check cashing place or a liquor store :P.

Ok, it's your nickle. But I can tell you you couldn't pay me to love right there. A few blocks East in Windsor Park is nice or south in Mueller is very very nice but 52 and Cameron is bad.

thanks all for your thoughts! @komeht, I'm appreciative and was just asking if by "bad" you meant dangerous or just kinda run down. I wasn't doubting what you said! But it sounds like from others as well, that you all mean it's dangerous.

thanks for the help!

It sorta depends on what you mean by dangerous -- violent crime as a whole is low in Austin, especially random, violent crime. So you are unlikely to become a victim of a daytime, violent crime. But property crime is higher and can be concentrated in apartment complexes, hence the police reports. And there have been some weird incidents right around there. I know many people who live in single-family homes within a few blocks of that location, the SF homes seem to be safer and everyone tends to know their neighbors. I shop at Capital Plaza and eat at Hil-berts which is right there and never worry about my safety but I would think twice before walking there at night or renting an apartment in one of those complexes.
