EzP - you and I are completely simpatico. Daughter, SIL and grand kid are in town. Wanted to see Franklin and revolted at the line at 10:45. All the way up to 12th. Went over to JMMCo, walked right up, got a beef rib, 3/4 lb brisket, 1/2 lb of sausage, squash and potato salad. Why wait when it is basically just as good?

Also don't ignore La Barbecue on S 1st. John Lewis is doing some great work there. Also completely concur about Rudy's, especially if you get the moist. Like Stiles Switch, open evenings and a/c. Was somewhat disappointed on my last Stiles trip, however.

And while the "experience" of the Salt Lick is unmistakable, the barbeque is exactly what you would expect from anyplace that feeds 3,000 on many weekend days.

If you're just visiting, DON'T go to Rudy's. They are, as said, consistent, and I'll eat there if I'm hungry and in the mood for beef and in a hurry, but if you're only in town for a little while, go for something much better - there's plenty of options.

Great advice. Thanks to all. Confirmed that Texans are very friendly & hospitable. Yet another reason I'd like to retire there!

Default Update

Thought I should update this after my trip. Sorry that I let so much time elapse before reporting. I visited last (2013)Labor Day weekend.

Anyway, I took the toll road from/to the airport-no issues whatsoever. However, I'm convinced that car rental companies love toll roads-using them as an excuse to charge additional daily fees. Had similar toll road fee experiences in Orlando and Denver.

Spent some quality time with my friends in Killeen-reminiscing. Visited a number of sites last visited in the 70's-including Stillhouse Hollow Lake, tank row on Ft. Hood, etc. Also enjoyed the barbecue at Black's in Lockhart. Drove west over to Lukenbach for the tee shirt/beer and stopped by Fredericksburg before returning to Killeen.

Flying in and out of Austin-Bergstrom was a breeze. The rental car center is conveniently just across the street from the terminal.

Yep. Thanks for the update. This thread may be useful for others heading north out of Austin from the airport.
