I am a mid-20s single male being relocated from Houston to Austin for work in October. Work will be located in Cedar Park, but I'd like to live somewhere equidistant from Cedar Park to downtown (commuting up to 30-40 minutes one way is no big deal as I'm from Houston after all). Looking to spend no more than $600ish on a bedroom. I don't care if it's sharing an apartment or living in a house or condo. I'm more concerned with location.

I also love hills and water, so living west would be excellent. From what Google maps is telling me, Hwy 183 is a toll road and it would be nice to avoid that.

Where would be fairly ideal? If I'm forgetting info just let me know.

Cedar Park 'wraps' around the NW side of Austin, so a lot depends on where in Cedar Park you work. Being near Parmer/1431 would be quite different from something around Lakeline Mall area. Just where IS work?

183 only starts being a toll road after lakeline mall dr. It splits into a local non toll road and the toll road. You will be going counter to traffic so 183 will mostly be empty on your drive in either direction. This means you can live closer to downtown and still only have a 15 minute commute.

Assuming your work will be close to 183, I would say live in the farwest area. There arent a lot of hills, but there are a ton of students living in that area so you can get a room in a multi room apartment. You will be going against traffic on mopac then 183

Alternately if you want to live closer to nature, hiking and mountain biking, you could live off 360, however the traffic on 360 is bad in both directions (canyon creek apartments maybe?). When I lived there I had a greenbelt with hiking trail in my backyard.

hardrock canyon is a standby for being within walking distance of a lot of commercial, lots of young people and somewhat close to downtown.

Doesn't the metro go right into Cedar Park? It's really nice, actually, and you can avoid the toll. You'd be commuting against traffic, so I'd imagine the free 183 road would work fine for your commute. That said, I'd look around the arboretum. 15-20 minutes to downtown on the weekends or in no traffic and probably 30-40 minutes to/from work depending on exactly where you end up.

Work is at the corner of 183A and 1431.

The reverse flow commute for traffic is great news. I'm also a car and motorcycle nut so living close to any fun roads are a bonus. Thanks for the suggestions. Keep em coming.

Then you want to live near old Spicewood Springs Road - you'll love motorcycling there and can take the back way to 183.

I saw a few $500-600 bedrooms available for rent on Craigslist. I'm not looking to get an apartment by myself. I'm looking to spend as little as possible because I spend a lot on toys and other recreational activities.

1431 out toward Lago Vista and Marble Falls is a great road...as long as the oncoming traffic is paying attention

Another Costco staff member, perhaps?

Nah. I work for a homebuilder.

Any general advice for a Houstonian moving there?
