I don't drive, neither does one of my roommates (he does drive for work doing deliveries, but bikes to work, doesn't own a car.) I have two roommates last year who did not own cars, they either biked or took the bus. 2 years ago, I had three different roommates who biked everywhere. A guy at work bikes everywhere.

I use one of my ebikes. Waaay easier that always pedaling, slowly. I have always lived within 7 miles of downtown. Currently in a safe neighborhood with home prices around 200k west of 35.

I'm also technically 'poverty' status because I don't work a lot. But I live great. I just don't spend a lot.

Occasionally, but on a daily basis I bike and ride the bus/MetroRail. It's getting easier and easier to live the car-free lifestyle at least in Central Austin

If you can afford to drive, you do. It's not like if you move here you can sell your car. Even when I lived downtown, I drove every day. Obviously there are people who can get by without driving because that's what they are forced to do. "Bad areas" are the ones that have the best public transportation for that reason. People choose to live and work near the bus stops and they can make it work. Student living areas have more public transportation options as well (West Campus, East Riverside, etc).

When I lived downtown I drove my car but also used car2go and it was simply AMAZING.
