We don't dare drink water out of our faucet here...is there an abundance of people drinking bottled water there, or is it relatively safe to drink out the faucet...?

I have been drinking the tap water for my whole life in the area, and so far no problems . Depending on where you live, there is well water (either city well or private well) or treated lake water (e.g. City of Austin).

Interestingly enough, the somewhat highly publicized article about pharaceuticals in drinking water found that only three cities did not show any positive tests for their list of chemicals, and Austin was one of them. I suppose it is because there is very little 'upstream' development from Austin on the Colorado....

Austin and San Antonio (and everything between) have the best tap water I have ever had in my life. I grew up in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area where the tap water tastes like jet fuel and everyone drinks bottled water instead. Ever since I moved to Austin, though, I've stuck with the tap water and never buy bottles anymore. My wife moved here from Florida and she has also given up bottled water.

we have bought a place in La Ventana in Driftwood (30 min south of downtown) and it is a community well,we tested both the outside and filtered inside tap water and both were deemed to be "potable" or drinkable .... we will still drink bottled water as we do up here in Toronto Canada to be safe because ground water does change seasonably depending on various factors including drought but my little bit of research has determined that in areas heavy in limestone geography (Evian France for instance ) as Hays county and Travis county are that there is no better natural filtration system than that, although the water will tend to be fairly hard.

We drink tap water (we filter it though) in Round Rock. It tasted good, but not as good as the one in Seattle. The problem is that the water is very hard, but that's all.

I drank tap water at my aunt's house with no problem. The problem is we now live in an old arse building on the 21st floor and the water smells weird.
