So I'm moving to Austin from Chicago. I'm recently unemployed but have enough saved up for about 5 months in Chicago. I'm not sure what the difference is. I'm looking for neighborhoods where there is a younger population and things to do. I'm moving there with a friend who is also looking for a job, we both recently graduated from college and we think Austin is a great place to move.

Job openings? Biggest markets?
What is the nightlife like?
Restaurants/foodie expectations? Especially Mexican and BBQ!
Best/hippest and cultural neighborhoods?
What is downtown like?
Public transport (Thinking of buying a bike but what is their transport like down there?)
Crime?
Diversity?
LGBT?
Cheapest rent for one or two bedroom apartments? Average cost of living?

We are planning to move there in about a month or so? Thank you for your help!

Other than searching on specific topics, reading this thread (starting with newest first) will likely answer all of your questions...

There are lots of people here from Chicago. Like other Midwesterners, you don't hear too much from them - mostly. In Austin proper, not a day goes by without seeing at least 3 or 4 Illinois plates.

Chicago is filled with people trying to decide where to move.

The taxes, unemployment rate, regulations, and crime rate seem to be going no where but up and I think a lot of folks have had enough (at least according to the IRS migration map).

I'm looking at Indianapolis IN, Austin TX, Plano TX, Nashville TN, and Nashua NH. I don't know where I'll go, but one thing is clear - staying in Chicago is not an option and I can always visit for a weekend if there's some specific Chicago activity in which I want to participate.

How important are the "big city amenities" to you?
If they are at all, you're aiming too small. I mean, Plano and Nashua are basically suburbs. Austin is growing in population, but many complain is lacking otherwise. Indy is a possibility. Why not Dallas, Houston, Seattle?

I'm a Chicago suburban transplant and it was a surprisingly easy transition for us. I feel like this is a better fit for us than Chicago was. Austin is pretty laid back and I think that is why I love it more than Chicago. I also lived in Madison in my early to mid twenties and recently went back for a visit. Austin and Madison really do have a similar feel to them, but I would say that Austin moves at a faster pace than Madison. I like our weather better in Austin though!

I've lived in big cities like Chicago and small towns like Warsaw,KY. Each has it's charms, but the most important thing to me is to find a place with minimal government interference ( Freedom Map )

Probably want to strike Austin proper off the list then, and be careful of many of the suburbs - you may find that you run into quasi-governmental HOA associations that "fill in the gap" so to speak.
