I am qualified accountant in my mid 20s who is thinking about relocating to Austin from Europe for a year for a new challenge. I hear Austin is growing and very vibrant for young professionals with great opportunities? I would be very grateful for any advice in relation to costs or general living? For example on cost of daily living? Best locations to live (rental websites/ rental costs)? Public transport? Night life? Sporting activities/ gyms?

I wish I could, but I have a job opportunity arising that won't let me have the luxury of going to visit first, hence I am looking for as much info. as possible to make an educated, well balanced decision.

The job would be near the University Texas JJ Pickle Research. What is this area like? Where would be best to get accommodation for working in this area? Could you live in downtown and commute to work? Type of accommodation - 1 bed apartment ideally. Looking for nice, safe accommodation that is convenient for commuting to work and easy to commute to night life/ sporting activities. My budget would be strong enough.

Domain. It's be pointless to commute from downtown to the pickle area. plus, why pay more when you can find mostly all of what you need in the domain area?

Great thanks for the advice. What would the Domain area be like to live in? Expensive/ safe? Is it easy to get downtown from domain area for socialising at weekends etc?

For a young professional, the Domain should be very nice...enough amenities right there that you won't need to 'go looking' for most essentials, yet far enough from downtown that you won't feel boxed in by all the constant traffic and construction. This presumes you will have a vehicle. If not, all bets are off...you will need to live quite close to work. You will find A) Rents are quite high the closer in to town IF you want a nice apt rather than something rather run-down and 2) Public transportation and traffic in general are two of the 'less attractive' aspects of daily life in Austin.

Plenty to study in this forum if you search for some of the key terms important to you. Seems well over 100 people a day are moving here and many have the same questions you have. Good luck!
