I've said this a hundred times already. Rail is not going to be a viable alternative for the vast majority of people in Austin until the city becomes denser and more walkable. Work on those things, then worry about rail. Anyone who votes for this would be better off just taking a stack of cash every month and burning it; they'll get the same benefits.

Figure out how to run a big city bus system, then maybe I'll let you play with the choo choo.

I like their little map. First they try to confuse and show all rail systems and "proposed" rail systems that have nothing to do with this. Then they use light green for what is getting voted on and a dark green for what could happen in the future. Usually the light color would be used for the future lines. When you take it all out and just see the very short light green line to and from nowhere it's a wonder if this thing will even get 30% of the yes vote.

Austin is quickly densifying (at least in Central Austin). Rail would further spur density because developments would spring up around stations. (Transit-oriented development)

Based on this causation logic, if you oppose higher density then you should oppose rail.
Of course there are plenty of other reasons to oppose Prop 1.

Like everything in Austin, it depends. If you are talking about the $600M for the rail line itself, about $140/yr. on a $200K house. But, because the bond language blocks issuance w/o the $400M in "road" bonds, then you are looking at $217/yr.

More.
