Hello,

My wife and I are looking at purchasing a new home. We are new to the Austin area and we like Georgetown but there seems to be such a variety to choose from. One property we went by a few days ago was Shady Oaks Estates where Jimmy Jacobs Homes is building. These are single family homes built on acreage home sites. Does anyone have any information about that area and the neighborhood in question? I tried to look up information regarding the school district for that community and it looks like they are in the Jarrell School District didn't know what sort of ratings or reviews exist for that particular ISD.

I looked at a few reviews online for Jimmy Jacobs Homes and it looks like they have had a lot of problems since being brought out by an outfit from Colorado. They have an A- rating with the BBB but a lot of reviews online suggest that they are merely interested in getting you to sign the contract and then forget all about you once they get you going. If anyone who has built recently with Jimmy Jacobs Homes can give me better insight into what to expect with their process.

Thank you in advance and appreciate the feedback.

I know the area vaguely that you are talking about, but is it really in JISD? If so, it is right on the border of GISD and JISD....

Some of Sun City is in JISD; there's Sun City residents on the Jarrell School Board. And, yes, Shady Oaks Estates is in Jarrell ISD.

I did clarify with the Jimmy Jacobs sales rep and she said it was Jarrell ISD. Personally I am new to the area and I have no idea, if that is a good or bad thing or whether or not it is a good part of town.

It isn't a selling point, that is for sure. Jarrell is a small, formerly rural district. In my mind, its reputation is simiiar to McDade ISD or Elgin. I know kids in all those areas whose parents work "in town"and who bring their kids to Austin for school.

If you have kids, check it out carefully. If you don't . . . well, it might affect resale somewhat especially if you are close to the Georgetown district line, GISD is well regarded.

JISD will not have near the resources that a larger district (like GISD) will have. If you any kids with special needs OR kids that will benefit from having AP or advanced opportunities, I would definitely recommend G over J. OTOH, if you have pretty much mainstream kids, there is potentially something to be said for the smaller community that would be associated with the Jarrell schools.

Two of my brother's grandsons graduated from Jarrell HS. One went to firefighter school and is now with the Austin FD. The other went to the University of Texas and earned a Civil Engineering degree (with honors) - he worked for a CE firm in Dallas, then decided to go to firefighter school like his brother, and is now with the Round Rock FD. Both are very happy.

As an alternative to Shady Oaks, check out Gabriels Grove. It has similar sized home sites, a variety of builders and is in GISD.
