Hi all,

I've received a fellowship to UT-Austin's full time MBA program, and I'm very excited to go to grad school for free. I'm planning to move back to Houston after I graduate to be close to my family. I was wondering if any fellow Longhorn students or alumni could share their experience with McComb's employment opportunities after graduation.

My background includes working in public accounting at a Big 4 + corporate accounting for an energy firm, and I also have my CPA license. I'm strongly considering specializing in finance, and then using my accounting background to move to corporate finance as a FP&A Manager in Houston. Is this realistic, or should I expect to work as a Sr. Financial Analyst first before moving up to manager? I'm also interested in Corporate Strategy, Investment Banking, Hedge Funds, Private Equity, and Asset Management; however, with my background, I don't think those are very realistic options.

Finally, what salary + bonuses should I expect after graduation for a Sr. Financial Analyst or FP&A Manager position? I found this link below, but I'm not sure if it's accurate since the starting salaries seem higher than I had expected. Plus it only shows the mean, meaning there are possible outliers on the high end bringing the averages up.

I am not a UT MBA grad, but I have similar experience working in Big 4 plus corporate accounting. Austin is a very small market for your skillset as you need to work for a larger company to fit the positions you are looking for. It's going to be a little difficult, but working with a startup as say a Analyst or CFO may work.

Network like crazy, but I think most of your opportunities are going to be in Dallas or Houston.

AustinDude, I believe OP stated in the second line that he wants to move to Houston after the MBA.

OP, first of all congratulations on getting a fellowship at such a great school. CPA + MBA is a killer combo, and I think you will find tons of opportunities in Houston. Houston's finance industry is very comparable to NYC, but with a substantially lower COL.

He should try networking on some of the UT sports boards. I've read similar discussions on a couple of them.
