Have you spent any time at all in Austin recently? It is nothing like the place you remember and is packed to the gills with Joneses.

I think the only schools where you will find the kind of culture you're looking for would be places like St. Francis or Waldorf.
It's actually packed with people exactly like the OP.

The absolute minute that "public" school isn't good enough - regardless of the school - you've lost.

Completely disagree. There are people who would never send their kids to government schools and it has nothing to do with classism and everything to do with educational environment.

And that's why you join the OP in the bunch that is Austin. When just because it is a "government school" denigrates the educational environment, regardless of the actual education environment. Well, there you have it.

Well, I guess the thread is completely derailed now! FWIW, at this very moment I have children in two different Austin private schools and one in public school. I love the AISD high school my kid attends and I love the private schools that the other two attend. For me, as a parent, it is all about meeting my children where they are and finding an environment that will challenge and support them.

Yep. Exactly. Could be the "worst" school in the region, but if your kid thrives - what does it matter?

Your earlier post alludes to parents looking for reasons not to send their child to a "government school" (snicker- had to say it). I am completely fine with public schools, but my son as severe ADHD and needs smaller classrooms with more attention from the teachers. I won't mention the testing.

I do think many public schools are great, however.

Nope. Some people are interested in a different type of education and environment other than that offered in a government school. Religious affiliation and freedom to practice it within a school environment, curricula designed for special needs or talents, small teacher-to-student ratio, etc. etc. etc. There are many many reasons for choosing a private education.

Hyena - please don't judge me, we have never met and you don't know me. People and children are complicated, many nuances make up a human being. To make a statement or conclusion like yours based on 2-3 paragraphs...hmmm.

Everyone else - thank you for your thoughtful responses, my partner and I have gained lots of good insights and perspective, it's much appreciated!

Well, to be fair, you emphasized (repeatedly) how "open minded" you are, and then said you wouldn't consider a public school no matter what, so you kind of brought that upon yourself.

Having lived in the Bay Area and now here, my sincere, honest advice is that you should probably just stay where you are, based on what you have written. What brings you (back) to Austin?

I would narrow it down to a few schools and go and visit them during the day when school is in. Also connect with some of the parents and see how they like it.
