Where was her favorite place to go and is it still there? Does anyone remember a place called the "Ghetto"?

8-10 years before my time, so I never saw JJ. (& never heard of the Ghetto?)

Saw a bunch of other notables from 75-85. That could be a fun thread. Best acts that folks have seen in Austin (date/venue/act) ?

Yes, I remember a big old subdivided house called the Ghetto - it was located in the West Campus area in the early '60s. It was a favorite residence/hangout for beatniks, then later on for hippies. Don't know if that's the place you are referring to.

One of my UT girlfriends was a high school schoolmate of JJ (who was a bit older). She talked me into going up to Threadgill's old dive beer joint/gas station to hear her friend sing in the early '60s. It was before Joplin went west to become famous. Her music was not to my taste at the time, but she seemed pretty nice, if not a bit unconventional.

Default Janice, you're missed here.

One of the thing about '70's Austin was that the liquor laws had changed in Texas in '73; big time. Liquor by the drink and an 18 year old drinking age. The 18 year old rule, because it was a "liberalization" of the long standing 21 year old regulation, meant in practice that anyone could get into a bar. And "anyone" meant: young women. I never dated a pretty girl in '70's or '80's who didn't have stories about getting into bars in Austin when she was 14 to 16 years old.
A bit of a digression, but, MY JJ story is only that my young girlfriend took up with an older man who looked rather like Paul Newman in his "Hud" days. HE said he'd bedded Janice back in the early '60's while at UT, as I remember. Bear in mind, she was cruelly voted "ugliest man" by one of UT's distinguished fraternities. God, we hated those frats and the Texas of the '60's for driving Janice out to California. Her death was still keenly felt, back then.
