Insurance is all over the map as to MRIs (as a couple other insured posters indicate). It's a very big 'gotcha' on some BCBS coverage.

His premise was even with decent insurance it isn't which I was responding to. There are many many "decent" insurance plans where MRIs are indeed affordable. That is why it's important to carefully review the benefits of a plan before signing up. Frequently it's a case of getting what you pay for and hoping the odds will be in your favor that you won't need a particular service or procedure. It's the same kind of gamble someone takes by being uninsured -- especially with a family.

For what it's worth, that $100 copay I mentioned was on a BCBS policy.

Just for sake of curiosity, when was this? My experience has been in the last 18 months; two different policies, two different patients. One we didn't ask about the copay (which, as I recall was $1200!), the other time I asked the question ahead of time and decided I could wait. Don't recall it was as high as the other, but it was several hundred dollars. Neither was ER related, which may make a difference, but both involved an in network preferred facility.
