Sounds like using a small local bank is what got you in this mess to start with.

Wells Fargo is just fine.

Well, if you keep an eagle eye on your account, perhaps.

I've had them make some major errors (depositing someone else's funds into my account, taking a huge amount out of my account in error because someone in Colorado wrote a check and whoever entered it in the system, computer or otherwise, got it wrong), and others that I know that have had Wells Fargo accounts have reported similar problems.

THL, who do you bank with? I was all set to use Wells Fargo when I move down late Summer, but now I am thinking differently after reading your post!

Default WaMu

I bank with Wells Fargo and Washington Mutual (WaMu).

I'm using WaMu more though because of the great deals they have for:
- Checking (free checks, money order, cashier's check, outgoing wire, notary (although WF notarizes more types of docs)),
- Savings (online rate is ~4%)
- and other creative accounts (Savings for Success for 6-7% - great for putting the property tax money).

I use University Federal Credit Union (and have an account with Germania Credit Union, though we don't use that one a lot) The Wells Fargo account is for a publication that I volunteer for - we originally set it up with a local bank, and then that bank got bought out by Wells Fargo, they changed the arrangement we had with the bank (added fees, etc.), then started messing up. Fortunately, one of the other volunteers (in Georgia) took on handling the finances (whew!) and has opened an account at a small local bank there and we'll be transferring all the funds there.

I'm a firm believer in credit unions after experiences with both banks and credit unions over the past 40 years or so.

I have multiple accounts with wells fargo including business accounts. I have found them to be fine.

They have some of the best online software of any bank

Well, they must be fine for some folks, because they're certainly a big bank.

I just got tired of (a) having to go down and fix their mistakes in person and having it take days or weeks, rather than the instant fix I get with my credit union, and (b) haring other people that I know having similar stories.

Your mileage clearly varies.

I'm glad there are Comericas down there. I won't have to get a certified check or ride around with cash.

Good luck.
