Wondering if anyone knows the history of why the attendance zone for McCallum High School stretches from 2222 to east of 35? Even more, is there talk of ever redrawing the zone? It just doesn't make sense!

In general the high school boundaries are pretty expansive. Here is the map. https://www.austinisd.org/sites/all/...s/schools.html

They are generally created to 'fill' the high school, more or less. A HS with a larger design capacity will have a larger zone than a smaller HS, as will a HS in an area with a lower ratio of HS age kids.

Politics (cough). Mueller (cough, cough).

I don't now this....but suspect it. (but maybe there's a better answer?) Doesn't matter to me since my dollars and kid flow thru RRISD.

It looks like it is somewhere from the 3rd to 5th largest zone - definitely behind Bowie and Austin, but similar to Akins and Anderson.

I am guessing that, geographically speaking, cutting off the West Austin component and shifting it to Anderson would be the most obvious change; however, both MCallum and Andersen are within spitting distance of their 'design' capacity as it stands.

As for Mueller, it appears that about 2/3rds of the housing will eventually track to Reagan and 1/3rd to McCallum. The boundary does not seem to have shifted since Mueller was planned, but it is hard to tell for sure.

McCallum boundary extended that far to the east even back when Mueller was the airport!!

The biggest significant change was about 15 years ago when Highland Hills area was moved to McCallum from Anderson.

Frankly, I think the McCallum zone makes more sense than the Austin HS zone!

Any zone that encompasses both sides of 35 should be praised and indeed the demographics of McCallum match the demographics of Austin more closely than any other school! 45% Anglo, 35% Hispanic, 14% African American (more than Austin) and 6% other, primarily Asian.

Still can't believe people are paying $680k for a condo on the Reagan side of Berkman.

It's not LASA but it is trying its hardest to do better things. Get to know the campus before you bash the feeder pattern. If I had the money I would't hesitate to consider the Berkman side of Mueller.

I love diversity, but I don't love the idea of driving from 2222 to almost Hyde Park 2x per day. It just doesn't make sense given the significant increase in our traffic. This plan would have been more feasible decades ago but isn't logical today.
