There are some very small studios in Hyde Park that may fit your bill. You really may be looking at a roommate situation if you want to be right near things (within 5-10 minutes). I am in 78723 and am paying $854 for my one bedroom. There are some things cheaper in the area but they will be quite rundown and not as safe. I am in an area that is in the middle of gentrifying (signed a lease for $797 and bounced up to $854). It takes me about 10 minutes to get to UT without traffic.

Apartments in the downtown area are probably going to be more than $800. Unfortunately, since housing is "relatively" inexpensive, and we are in a Sellers' market, there is a premium on rental properties because there are not enough homes for the people who want to buy; so they end up renting until they can find something. Landlords respond by jacking the prices up quite a lot.

Don't rent east of 35 and you're safe. Austin is very safe.

This is simply false and outdated information. You have made several quick misinformed one sentence posts in slightly outdated posts on the forum in the last 24 hours that are less than helpful to anyone who may be searching for help in the city.

Oh I dunno man, I live just a few blocks north of Rundberg and I35 on the East side and it is basically Beyond Thunderdome over here these days. My Daily commute is avoiding the Immortaan Joes War-Boyz as they terrorize Middlefiskville and attack anything coming off the I35 feeder.

Staying on the back streets offers little protection as a huge gang war has broken out between the Russian and Itallian mob families and we now have hourly running gun fights that are getting in the way of our regular Amazon deliveries.

I mean dont get me wrong the multitude of Taco Trucks are very nice but the constant state of despair and lawlessness just kind of wears on you day in and day out. This may get better soon however.
Rumor's are that Batman has been spotted in the area and may be looking to bring some semblance of peace to the war torn upper east side.

I may have made all that up. At least about batman....

The East side is where a lot of people WANT to live right now. Great restaurants, bars, new buildings, etc. with still some of that character that makes it the east side
