I moved here from NY 5 years ago, and had no idea why people always wanted to go to cold weather locations during summer, but now I get it.

Many people are going to Colorado, its not just the weed there is a lot to do.

But that may be too far of a drive for a weekend trip.

Max 7-8 hours each way by car.
I've lived here for a very long time to know that it's not even worth trying to drive out some place decent. Flying out is your best option. I guess, it's time to use all that money you saved by moving to Texas

I'll hop a frontier flight to Colorado this fall instead.
Well you wouldn't drive thru El Paso to get there, lol... But if you want to DRIVE to cooler weather, Ruidoso is the nearest option... Personally I'd rather hop an early morning flight to Denver and then drive into the mountains from there. 2 hr N/S and then an hour up I 70 gets you 70* weather

This is an excellent suggestion. We went to Ft. Davis, Alpine and Marfa last summer and it was really nice. Just checked and it's 76 there now with highs running around 80 and lows around 60. The scenery there is beautiful and you can stop on your way in and swim at Balmorhea. There is plenty to see and do in the area. If you have the PBS app, check out the Daytrippers show on that area.

I second the Ft Davis/Alpine/Marfa rec. Just did it in early August. Beautiful mountains, hiking, McDonald observatory star party, Marfa lights, horseback riding. Comfortable in jeans or shorts. Swim in the cold water of Balmorhea.

Loved staying at The Hotel Limpia.

The Ouachita range of the Ozarks, which is on the Okla and Arkansas border would be the only thing closer than Ruidoso but only by a couple of hours at best. Check into Hot Springs. Ark.
