We had paid sick leave (SL) - you could only use it when you were 'sick', as defined in the employee handbook. Some years ago, we switched to one pool of leave - Personal Time Off (PTO) - which you could use when you were sick or when you just wanted to take off. They basically added the SL and our personal leave together to get PTO. If we were required to have sick leave, our PTO would, presumably, be reduced accordingly. So I am not personally a fan.

From a quick glance at the feedback page, none of the questions appear to deal with reduction in existing leave to allow sick leave.....

Most likely that is what would happen: fewer vacation days. Hopefully not reductions in force.

But then there is no benefit for someone that has vacation already - part of their existing leave pool becomes more limited (sick days only). Now, I do understand that there are lots of people that don't have any paid leave at all, and that is a different issues; however, I don't know that some sweeping sick leave requirement is going to make everything better....

It's like squeezing a balloon - the air just moves to a different location.

Another instance of the government interjecting themselves where they have no business, IMO.

MOST "good" employers recognize the value place on both vacation AND sick time benefits to their employees. This law benefits no one in their employ. The small businesses - which employ a LOT of folks - will either relocate out of the city, find a "work-around", or pay their employees less to offset the cost of the "benefit". Or just throw up their hands and shut down - NONE of those options are going to help those they proclaim "need" this.

But....Austin being Austin, I'm sure they're going to go ahead with it anyway.

Austin is one of the places where the govt people think they are smarter than the business owners. They aren't, but that doesn't stop them, because majority of voters also ignorant.

another liberal idea comping to Austin then to the state - like i have told you all liberals never ever stop- bit by bit piece by piece they try and succeed with their progressive agendas

govt has no business telling employers what or how to pay people- smart employer who want to attract the best and keep them will offer benefits as necessary to attract and keep employees

the article also starts off with racist rants that blacks and latinos suffer- well guess what - get the right skills to be valuable to your employer and earn those benefits -

you people better wake up these leftist attack attack attack every day and one day you will wake up and say to yourself - hell we are not much better than calif - let the makers place dictate what employers must do - don't fall for this crap the poor or minorities are hurt- just like the bs its for the children or the firefighters or the cops or for better roads

make these fricking leftist commies explain how those minorities are hurt with fact not liberal diatribe crap not backed up

Austin is in the process of becoming the texas bay area- stop this crap now

PTO is a much better model than sick leave + vacation.

I have to agree, this seems very intrusive for the City to be getting involved in employer/employee relationships like this.
