I'm living in San Antonio right now but have been looking into how to move to Austin for several months, but one of the things that makes me hesitate the most is if I'll be able to afford living there.

Right now I make about $25k (household income) a year for a household of 3, I rent a 2 bedroom apt for $650 a month so while I'm not living large I make enough to make ends meet.

Would a situation with a similar salary be doable in Austin? I wouldn't mind downsizing to a 1 bedroom if necessary.

Not in Austin proper for sure. Probably not even in the Metro area.

There’s no where close that one could survive on that. And you’d be coming from the most affordable metros in Texas to one of the most expensive

Dont really think it would work out. The things that make austin different than san antonio require a lot more money to enjoy. Otherwise at your income level the amenities might even be better in san antonio.

What's changed in the few months you asked this before? (Referring to this thread here - //www.city-data.com/forum/austi...omparable.html) No. Not unless you live with like eight roommates in a two bedroom on the east side.

I just did a search on zillow, for 1/1 0-$650 there were three options available in Austin proper. The next closest rentals are in Bastrop.
