My girlfriend and I are strongly considering a three day weekend in Austin next month (Feb. 15-18). It will be the first visit for each of us.

Can anyone answer the following?
  • Any Austin "must sees" that we need to reserve in advance? We are early planning now and don't want to be caught off guard. (We live in SF, where everyone learns they should have made reservations for Alcatraz in advance)
  • Live music venues? We especially like jazz, and know Austin is a big music city. We're likely to try and see live music each night.
  • Any local food specialties or "only in Austin" items we should try?
  • Any suggestions on a cool neighborhood to het an AirBNB? We both like walkable neighborhoods and enjoy walking a lot.

Thanks in advance. I know I can Google the above (and am doing so), but wanted to get some help narrowing things down.

That is Austin marathon weekend. Downtown hotels are probably already booked. Close in Airbnb’s will also be booked. It’s not acl or sxsw nuts but things will be busy. Just an FYI.

Here's a link to jazz clubs in Austin. There's quite a few more than I thought there was.

Must eats : BBQ and Tex Mex.

For BBQ my fave is Browns BBQ. It’s a food trailer on South Lamar. They don’t do any advertising but it’s owned by an Old Austin family & recipes have been in the family for generations. There’s lots of people who come to Austin and wait in line hours for BBQ at trendy places. It’s crazy! I’d put browns brisket against those places anyday! If you go ask for Little D and tell him Dani sent you. Eastside Tavern also a cool more modern spot for BBQ.

Also - the original Salt Lick is an awesome experience - especially if it’s a nice day . It’s a gorgeous drive but it’s byob so don’t forget to bring a cooler.

There’s great Tex Mex everywhere - my faves are Matt’s El Rancho, Joes Bakery, Arrandas, Chuys

My absolute all time fave restaurant in Austin is Uchi. Also Dirtys hamburgers is an awesome greasy spoon that’s been around since the 50s and has a lot of history! My dad used to take me there all the time when I was a kid before the UT games. Plus it’s close to UT campus and the drag which is cool area to see.

I would stay in 78704 or even 78702 for walkability . Those are both happening areas with tons of stuff to do! 78701 is the heart of downtown and entertainment district so lots to see and can walk everywhere.

Live music is all around , some popular spots I like are Antones, Continental Club, Broken Spoke, Whitehorse, Saxon Pub ... but honestly easy to find music playing any night of the week

Hmmm... I think I answered most but let me know if you have any other questions!
