Just imagine the property value. I'm sure it was a tough call for the family, but maybe time to cash in...

I only ate there a few times, it was decent but that's it. So much competition these days. Maybe they'll auction off stuff like Threadgills and Frisco did.

I haven't eaten there in years, but the last time I did it didn't seem to hold up to the recollections I had from when I ate there frequently in the 80s. It used to be the only place to get a really good, unique burger, but that isn't the case anymore either.

Reading the whole article (it's not that long):

Quote:
“When it was realized that both businesses would be closing, we considered many options and decided to work with a local restaurateur and friend to write the next chapter at 6th & West Avenue,” Sammie Joseph Jr. said. “We are honored to pass the torch from one local operator to another.”
While I'm sad to see Hut's go, we have had a wave of great local burger joints pop up in recent years. Wholly Cow, Hat Creek, P-Terrys, Mighty Fine, Phil's, and I'm sure there are more. We're living in city now rich with good home-grown burger joints, IMO. So the legacy kind of lives on...

While it never appealed much to me, Hut’s is a genuine Austin icon... like Nau’s.

They still have a booming location at the airport and probably got a really big check for the downtown location.
