Good evening everyone, I hope you all have had a wonderful day. I am currently looking for some advise or suggestions on Fort Worth and Austin. I am a single mother currently living in a New Hampshire. I am planning to move down to Texas next summer. I have thought long and hard about this choice and discussed it at length with my children so this is a family choice. I am looking for suggestion on the best places to raise a family. At the point I would be moving I would have one child in high school a daughter who loves soccer and cheerleading, and three in elementary school. Two more daughters and a son whom are all very active with sports, and extra curricular activities. My reasons for moving are mostly I hate the snow among other more personal reasons that I dont feel I should get into as much. My reason for waiting a year is my daughter would like to finish junior high school with her friends and I feel as though that was a fair request. I am a business owner and will be looking into buying a home vs. Renting. So I guess my questions are: where are the best places to raise a family? Do those areas have plenty of sports and other activities for children? Where are the best school districts? And what areas should I avoid as a single woman with kids? Any suggestions would be greatly apprcieated. Thank you in advance and have a wonderful evening!

Why Austin?

I chose austin because my children and I have gone there on vacation for the last 3 years and we just fell in love with it. It's hard to pick just one thing we love everything. It's so very different from NH. As for where I will be working I own my own business that I run from home so I can work from anywhere. Which is great being a single mom because I get to be with my children and make my own schedual so I dont have to miss my childrens sports games. As far as my budget I have been approved for $362,000 however I would like to stay around 280,000 to 300,000. We live comfortably and I have been able to build a good nest egg for my self and children and I do not want to take away from that.

So are you looking for 4 bedrooms? How many square feet approximately? You will likely have to bump your budget up due to wanting good schools. Plan on 300,000-350,000. Southwest, around where Slaughter meets Westgate or Brodie might be a good fit. Or you can go north. Depends on how close to downtown you want to be. South Austin is nice because you're closer to the Greenbelt, Lake, downtown etc. but if you look northward you'll have more to choose from.

What are some parts of town you stayed in when visiting?

I'm thinking Pflugerville, Round Rock, Georgetown, Cedar Park aka the northern suburbs.

Would you say Cedar Park is kind of hard to get into under $300k?

I've been looking in that area for awhile now and it seems once you drop under $300k you lose a ton of square footage

I think that would apply in many areas, honestly. you can still purchase in CP for less than $300k. I know many people who have. Buttercup Creek is still fairly affordable. You're not going to have a 3000 sq ft house but it'll be enough. The OP can get a 3/2 at 1800-2000 sq ft. I don't know of many areas that have giant houses at below $300k unless they're the older kb homes. To get into the "good school" areas of RR/Pf you'll probably spend closer to 300k and the home won't be that large either.

Did anyone else come up with seven kids total? That's a bunch of bedrooms(and bathrooms!)

I think in really round numbers, Fort Worth is going to be easier on the home-purchase front; but there's good info on Austin here already. Bad news is the 15 year-old 3/2 DRHorton home behind us just listed at $350K and will probably sell before the end of the month.

I think it's 4. The one in HS and the 3 in elementary.

Oh goodness no deffinetly not 7 children. I have a 13 year old, twin 6 years olds, and an eight year old. We have stayed near round rock and really enjoyed that area. I dont mind bumping the budget if it means better schools. I also have a very sizable down payment separate from I was approved for. I just want make sure I'm paying no more than 2000 per month in my mortgage. As I will still have to pay my utilities other household Bill's and my car payment. I dont want my children to have to give things up in order to pay the mortgage.
