Took my kids to Enchanted Rock in the early 1980s.. they had a ball running around up there.

You have to make reservations now because the park fills up.

We spent a lot of time out there in the early 80s, maybe we crossed paths .

The cave is still there. Lost a wallet in there in the early 80s and then someone mailed me my (expired) driver's license to me 8 or 9 years later.

We love going to Galveston, there’s plenty to do and see there for kids, and you get the beach to boot. There’s also going to be an Iceland Holiday Display at Moody Gardens that may be cool to see.

We ran across that ice display by accident a few years ago, very cool (pardon the pun).

We stayed at the San Luis hotel, which was really done up for the holiday season, as well.

Port Aransas > Galveston, by a long shot!

It might already be too late to get a reservation, but this is a great family place. Lots of farm animals. Just North of Wimberley.

Gumbert's Cypress Acres Ranch They have 3 cabins/residences you can rent. The Log Cabin is the most fun.

We took that train advice a few times (while living there) and it was worth it. And easy. Just park downtown near the WF and hop on the train. Kids love the observation car. Omni is nice, clean and with a rooftop pool.

Lost maple, the only shortest distance driving to see the foliage.

Downtown Fort Worth is a pretty good weekend trip from Austin. You can take the Amtrak up. The FW zoo is great for kids. The cultural district has museums (Kimball, Modern, Amon Carter) that you would not expect in this "Cow Town". The kiddos might like the stock yards and just being in Sundance Square is lovely. It is very family- and (surprisingly) pedestrian-friendly (more so than DT Dallas, IMO).

On a two day trip you could see a lot and feel quite transported from your Austin rituals.

Thanks for all your suggestions. We went to Dallas and the kiddos had a lovely time. We spent some time at Gaylord Texan, Zoo, Christmas lights etc. Ate a lot including at this little BBQ place called Bartley's that was very close to Gaylord in Grapevine - my son especially loved the ribs that we went by there on our way home and grabbed some more to bring home. All in all, it was a nice family outing.. perhaps next time we should do the train ride
