Something I've also noticed is these developments also seem to be flourishing in northern states. I originally assumed it was a southern thing due to permissive outdoor climates (not much snow, seldomly very cold) where as I thought northern states would cater more to indoor malls so to speak... I guess this isn't true.

Take a look sometime at the $25 Billion Hudson Yard development in New York City.
They built a huge 28 acre concrete platform over a massive railroad yard on Manhattan and are building 17,000,000 square feet of commercial & residential space on top of it, plus some public park spaces.

Smaller land area than the Domain, but many times the space in highrises.
