Our city council has added juneteenth. We already offered 11 paid days off, compared to the 10 every other city offers. Now we have 12.

I guess it's to compensate for Austin only paying employees way more that other cities. And way more than state employees.

Our city council seems to want to not only match, but exceed Berkeley, Portland, and Seattle.

A race to the bottom.

Not sure if you're being facetious.

Glad we are paying employees more than most cities and giving them more holidays than most.

Federal Govt Holidays

Wednesday, January 1 New Year’s Day
Monday, January 20 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 17* Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 25 Memorial Day
Friday, July 3** Independence Day
Monday, September 7 Labor Day
Monday, October 12 Columbus Day
Wednesday, November 11 Veterans Day
Thursday, November 26 Thanksgiving Day
Friday, November 27 Thanksgiving Friday
Friday, December 25 Christmas Day

Government jobs usually do have a pretty nice Holiday schedule be it at the Fed, State, County or Municipal level. The only difference between Fed and City of Austin is that Juneteenth in place of Columbus Day. Also, the city seems to have Christmas Eve as an official holday.

I'm good with making Juneteenth a paid holiday. It should be so throughout the state of Texas.

Agreed. Most Americans outside of Texas/Okalahoma actually had no idea what Juneteenth was until this year.

Federal Government should do away with Columbus Day. I've never understood why its a US Fed Holiday, Columbus never stepped foot in modern day USA and also he sailed for Spain, not England. If anything, Latin America has more ties to Columbus than North America does.
