Has crime gone up over the past year? Seeing a lot of videos on youtube about crime increase and shootings happening around Downtown and East Austin, along with increased gang population. I'm considering a relocation to the area and this has me worried

Crime might have gone up some since the Coronavirus, but I can't say for sure because I haven't heard. But, even if crime has increased, Austin is one of the safest cities in the United States. I've been all around Austin for over 40 years and I have never felt unsafe anywhere I've ever been in the city and the metro.

That’s reassuring. Does it feel safe at night as well? And in the nightlife areas?

For the most part, yes. The homeless problem here is a nuisance but thats about it in terms of safety. That and like anywhere, don't leave valuables in plain-sight of your vehicle. Austin does seem to have a pretty noticeable property crime / theft issue.

You just have to practice common sense in any larger city, Austin being no exception. There are gangs here and there is crime and as the population increases, the crime goes up correspondingly. But it's no dodge city, if that's what you're wondering.

Having lived in Atlanta , Miami, New York and New Delhi for significant amount of time, I would say Austin is leagues ahead in terms of safety and crime. Till 2016 you could walk around 6th street at 1am with no issues, granted dirty 6th post 2016 has become a **** show so definitely needs to be avoided but places like rainey street, east austin and west6th are pretty nice and safe to go and enjoy at any time of the night.
