Hey

OK - another one of random questions: where to open an account.

my better half still has an account with WellsFargo, but I do not really like their checking account options - we both have savings accounts with online banks (ETrade, ING, etc) so having a savings account with WF is not appealing to us.

I am tempted to go with one of the big guys - Bank of America etc .. but I usually prefer sort-of smaller banks - not truly local, but regional ones - they seem to care more. any advice?

The key features we want are: 1) no fees 2) refund of ATM usage fees, even with others' ATM's and 3) unlimited Bill Pay. We would have direct deposit into it.

Thanks

Igor

Look into credit unions they usually provide great service with the lowest fees and some of the best rates.

Definitely go with a CU if you can. Most can give you what you listed, although they tend to be weaker in the all-encompassing online service. We never really need it, so we use a CU and don't pay for it .

I recently opened an account with Guaranty Bank and I think they're great. Free checking, online bill pay, etc. I don't know much about them but they're very friendly and their customer service is unbelievable. I've been with B of A for several years and I like Guaranty better.

I have been very happy with my free CapitalOne checking account. They give free online bill pay through Quicken. Most other banks charge $9.95 per month for this feature. They also refund any surcharge customers may incur when using another bank's ATM machine.

Please whatever you do stay away from Wachovia. We just moved here a few months ago and had THE worst experience with them. I thought B of A was bad, with all their fees, but would take them back any day over Wachovia. We have always loved credit unions and are now back with another (University Federal Credit Union). They have been fabulous. I highly recommend them.
