Battle of the BBQs: Kansas City vs. Texas - TODAY Grilling Guide 2008 - MSNBC.com

The Salt Lick beat out Kansas City for it's BBQ. How many of you knew about Salt Lick before even coming or moving to Austin? What did you think?

Although Salt Lick is really good and the atmosphere is second to none, I think there are a few places in Texas that are better. Overall though, I haven't eaten better BBQ in any other state that I've been to. I've eaten BBQ in: South Carolina, Florida, California, Illinois, Nevada, New Mexico, oklahoma, North Carolina, and Arkansas.

Do any of you think that you've eaten better BBQ than Salt Lick or any other place in Texas? My uncle who lives outside of Chicago and has for most of his life, swears that there is no better BBQ in the country than the options we have here. He has also traveled extensively throughout his career and although he has found some gems in other states, no state has the number of great restaurants and the consistency as Texas. This is a great article:

AnÂ*American barbecue pilgrimage. - By David Plotz - Slate Magazine

Anyway, in the 18 years or so that I've been going to Salt Lick, we've run into quite a number of celebrities eating there and have heard of many more that make it a "must have" when visiting Austin. Another great attraction to Austin and Texas, or just a side note?

I'm not a fan of Salt Lick BBQ, although the atmosphere is great and a neat place to take out-of-towners.

I think it really depends on when you go. I've been there during the week and I think because it's slow, it's not as good. On Sunday's at noon it's always been great. I've never heard anyone say that their BBQ sucks, unless they were vegetarians.

Well, I suppose we are biased with it being just down the road, but we love the place. Sat nite with the kids and some music and some great brisket, is hard to beat..
I will say that its the brisket thats tops for us, the rest of the menu is just OK.. imho
Cheers

We loved loved loved the Salt Lick when we lived in Austin. When I was down there for a visit in April we went back our first night and the waitress actually remembered me and I hadn't been there is over seven years! Anyway, we have been to just about every BBQ joint in Austin and SL was always our favorite.

I like Texas bbq better than in other states, but Colorado can do a good steak. The best bbq we got there was from Texas and KC transplants who opened resturaunts. I think Salt Lick is good, but it's not the best bbq around, but that's just my opinion.

IMHO, Salt Lick's sauce (if you're into sauce on your BBQ) is their best asset. Without it, their food is pretty average and a noticeable step down from the fabled establishments in Lockhart.

I will admit that I save room for a Salt Lick turkey sandwich with extra sauce when I'm traveling from ABIA.

Texas BBQ is awesome, Smitty's being the best. But Oklahoma Joe's in KC, KS is right up there with the best in Texas.

Also, there is a great BBQ joint in Putney, VT of all places. A Georgia expat named Curtis Tuff cooks up some great, fall-off-the-bone style ribs with awesome hot bbq sauce.
