I feel your vibe, girl. Not sure if I could kill one, but I know I don't like them either.

Yes, it is a checkered garter snake. Completely harmless and good to have around.

Found a snake like that in my kitchen, sindwinding right at my little boy. I distracted the snake, told the kid to run get daddy's shovel, then made snake jelly out of the d****** thing.

Its very easy to classify snakes---if its a snake, its a bad snake!
A Sidewinder snake also has black diamond checks albeit smaller ones. If the snake you killed was sidewinding, it may have been the deadly variety. Not sure if the checkered garter sidewinds.

No way.

Any snake on tile or a hard smooth service will have difficulty getting "traction" to move. So it may look like it is side-winding.

The true sidewinder snake is not found in Texas.

Old thread, but yes Checkered Garter snake.

They eat worms and lizards.

Not aggressive at all and will not bite even if picked up.
It will however poop on you with some stinky sh*t, as a defense.

Here is a picture of one I caught that my daughter takes care of.

This is a Checkered Garter Snake, nothing to worry about. He was either looking for a meal or a warm, dark area to digest his meal. Check here for any information. eNature: FieldGuides: Species Detail
Hope I helped. Also, you are sadly mistaken if you believe all snakes are bad. Seeing a side-winding snake in your kitchen headed toward your child, I admit would be rather scary and probably best you get your child away. I do disagree with killing it though. Trapping and releasing it would do much better. Next time, you should contain the animal (throw a bucket or an empty plastic tote on it. Almost anything will do) and contact a local animal control officer. They are here to help and can safely relocate the creature (without getting guts on your floor).
