Chris- is it difficult to find an apartment in Austin while you're still looking for work? My boyfriend and I are just finishing grad school and looking to move to Austin and I am wondering how difficult it will be to get a rental application approved before we have proof of employment in Austin.

Oak Forest - 183/Jollyville/Oak Knoll - great schools, big trees, big yards, good location. Only thing that doesn't meet your criteria is age of house..they are 70's houses, but quite a few have been remodeled.

Problem with Milwood is that the houses were sort of slapped together and the ones I've been in just don't seem to be built very well. Every house over there looks like it needs a coat of paint.

Thanks for all the responses. I guess the next step in regards to the Milwood houses would be to actually go to a couple of open houses and see how they stack up. I'm glad we are looking at the "right" area for where we work.

Autumne- To answer your questions about apartments...our first choice apartment did not care that we did not have jobs. Others we looked at did require you to have a job or have at least a certain amount of money in your savings/checking account. It is a pretty large number like a full years amount of rent or perhaps it was even 2 years. You can always get a co-signor but they have to make a certain salary. Bottom line...when you tour or call about a complex ask them straight up about their requirements.
