this was a really interesting article on Austin as the next boomtown of Texas, discussing the job growth/construction boom/strong housing market and the tightrope being walked to balance the growth while keeping Austin Weird.

Enjoy!

Great article Gigi! The article mentions that the chamber of commerce is trying to prevent the boom/bust cycles here by starting another boom. I didn't really understand what they were doing to prevent the next bust though.

Personally, I'll be amazed if we don't go through another bust here if the national economy turns down. Here's to hoping though.

I think the next bust will come when we run out of water, our schools are so crowded that no body is getting an education and the of course when the high tech busts. As far as keeping it weird, that time as gone already!

Seriously. I visited San Antonio last spring and hung out in the downtown area. There really was a funky vibe there that reminded of Austin many years ago. I think San Antonio is doing much better than Austin at keeping the culture that makes it what it is, and their slogan says it all: Keep San Antonio Lame.
