Hey guys, next year I plan on going to Austin to take in a Longhorn game, but I live in Vancouver, Canada. I know it's a while from now, but I might as well get my answer in advance.

Here in Vancouver, BC you're legal to drink at 19. I'm currently 18, but turn 19 in June. I have a fake ID that says I was born in 1988, but I was really born in 1990.

Since you have to be 21 in the states to drink, which is what I will be with my fake ID when I go down for a Longhorn game, do bars/clubs require anything else for people out of state/other countries to go in? Also do they "scan" the ID's to identify fake ID's?

And lastly, what are some good bars/clubs in Austin? Preferrably closer to UT.

Most clubs will only accept a legal state ID or Texas drivers drivers license. Not that many years ago, I was not allowed in with a U.S. passport (long story). Due to the stringent requirements related to underage drinking, you may manage to get an extended stay, if you aren't careful .

Don't get caught with a fake ID. It's a big university, it's right there and they know what to look for.

I should have explained in a bit more detail, my friend and I will be going, but he will actually be 21 by the time we go down. Would he be denied entering clubs/bars too? Or is there something else that they require?

However our ID's will look exactly identical, even though mine is fake. I'm sure if they looked at both of the ID's, they wouldn't be able to tell that mine is fake.

More than likely, they won't let either of you in. IF you were both obviously over 21 (more like 30 or something) they might let you in on Canadian IDs, but if you are anywhere near 'marginal', your stuck with the over/under clubs that let 18 and up in.

I agree with Trainwreck. We just moved down from Toronto in August and some places that wanted a driver's license as ID, did not want to accept our Ontario DL. They wanted to see a Texas DL. Both my wife and I are in our 40's so this was not to prove age.

Bars down here are pretty strict, and its not like they will go broke if they turn you away. There will be plenty of other people wanting to get into the bar.If they do not recognize the ID, they will probably not accept it.

Do they allow screaming/running around children in bars over there?

I've seen children in licensed restaurants, but I don't think they are allowed into an establishment defined as a bar. Not sure what the distinction is between one and the other.

So far, I have not seen any screaming kids in public places down here. They seem to learn their manners young. We had friends back north with kids that we dreaded going to dinner with. Nothing like that down here so far.

The best information I heard about Austin so far. Thank you. I am looking for a place like this.

Your friends sound like New Yorkers. I dread every day down here. Seems like kids and parents have never heard about manners or respect.

BTW, what 'licensed restaurants' are?

Not all restaurants down here serve liquor. Some even have a BYOB program in place.

We had dinner at a nice place downtown last week. They had a VERY extensive wine list (up to $1,000s per bottle) but no other alcohol of any type.

Most of your major chains, Applebee's, Outback, Jack Astor's etc. are licensed restaurants.
