Well, you could face the berm towards your own home that way you'd only be shooting at your own house.

I'd like to practice target shooting with .22 rifle and my 9mm handgun on my own property.
Why exactly? Why not go to a safe range?

To save some money. Ranges aren't free. I ended up getting an air rifle and that is fine for target practice. I can hit a small japanese gong from all the way on the other side of the property.

I also ended up buying an SKS and that is a 7.62x39mm round. A very loud rifle. I never did find out if it's legal to shoot on my property or not. I'm not sure who to call for a reliable answer.

For now it's the .177 caliber air rifle.

I was watching a show on HGTV and one of the houses featured had its own gun range. Of course, it was in a basement and it was an extremely expensive house. It was just a little area surrounded by a certain depth of concrete with a target at the end. You could probably build something like it on your property for way less.

Why don't you call the local law enforcement? They'll be able to tell you.

I'm not sure on the exact circumstances but I somehow doubt the proper range precautions were taken. May have been a ricochet, but from a .22? Freak thing really.

I suppose just calling a non-emergency police # would be the easiest way to find out.

Here is the website I mentioned in the 1st post.
Bastrop County Commentary
Sorry there was no ricochet in this particular case just one person's total disregard for another's safety. Texas has statutes that allow prohibits fire arm usage, with exceptions, on lots less than 10 acres: County shoots down gun ban | San Marcos Mercury

Thanks for the info on Bastrop. That link you gave me made me laugh though and I wondered if it was a spoof or real reporting.

I'm confused. That article says that any sort of ban was NOT passed. The bid to prohibit firearms on 2 acres or less failed. Even after that kid died.

We have lived in rural Bastrop County for 24 years and I can tell you from experience that the mentality of people who move here is that they live in the "country" so they can do anything they want. Those people usually don't stay around because they have no intention of making a home or being part of a community. Currently, there are renters at a property down the road who are shooting assault rifles for hours on weekends and, judging by the cans in their driveway, drinking beer while they and their friends do so. Yes, I will call the sheriff. Not because I don't think they should have guns (although I don't), but because they are the kind of people who give no thought to how their actions impact others.

Sorry to be nit picky but I highly doubt any one is using an assault rifle in the neighborhood.
